If you have either one of these panels in you’r house, it is very important that you read the rest of this blog. The problem with Fedral Pacific Electrical Panels (FPE) and Zinsco is the fire hazards they are known to cause. These panels if found to be installed in your home, should be inspected immediately. The chances of your house going down in flames is very real, if your home is using one of these fire hazards. Back in the 80 FPE was producing its panels but was also testing them as well so they had no one to answer to in terms of safety this is the main reason why these panels are unsafe, they cut saftey measures. The main reason the FPE panel’s fail so often, is due to its “Stab-Lok” breakers that do not trip under overloaded conditions, sometimes these breakers will show no power, such as the breaker showing a trip but it may have power running to it even if its showing in the off direction. The failure rate of this panel is about 80%, this by any rate of failure is very high. The other panels that home owners should be on the watch for are Zinsco panels. These panels fail due to a bad connection with the panel bus to the breaker which in most cases causes burning and, or arching in the panel resulting in fires. These panels are just as notorious for there failure as the FPE panels. For more information on these panels go to our page on Hazards and preventions. To learn more on these panels Click Here

Your driving along in your car and that check engine light pops on and your thinking what could it be. Most people are not mechanics or do they have mechanical abilities so what do they. They take there car to a mechanic and have the problem figured out hopefully its just a bad oxygen sensor, or you cars MAF was going bad but sometimes the check engine light can mean thousands of dollars in repairs. So if your car is showing sings you take it in to a professional, but what about your home? Here are some ” Check engine lights” that can lead to some electrical issues in your home. One of the most common issues we see at Always Best Choice are home owners calling us to see about an outlet, switches not working, or a light flickering. These seem like little issues nothing major but the cause of these issues can bring a whole list of problems. When a switch or outlet dosn’t work it maybe do to loose neutrals, grounds, or exposed wires arching at the panel or inside the fixture its self. One such issue we currently had was with a customer that reported there T.V, was smoking and the dryer plug had melted. these items are not cheap and in total cost about $1,000. The case for all this was a loose neutral which was coming back on the ground which causes an increase in heat and can bring wires to failure. As well serious problems can cause fire’s which can bring down your home. So if its a “Check Engine Light” make your first choice Always Best Choice.

Now this post is for all of you weekend warriors who like to Do things your self. Doing projects on your own can be a good way to save money, as well to cut cost, but some projects are better left to the professionals. It may seem like a good way to cut cost and keep money in your pocket but the Con’s overlook the Pro’s of this money saver. In the field of electrical improvments doing this on our own could come at a higher cost to you, losing your home or your life. Electrocution is the sudden and involuntary introduction of large – or persistent – amounts of electricity into the human body. Many do it yourself enthusiasts have been the unfortunate victims of Electrocution and this is because of an inability to rewire properly or simply because they are unsure as to what they are doing.

The Con’s of installing or repairing electrical systems by one’s unlicensed self can be fatal and always illegal. Between 2003-2005 89% of electrical fires in residental buildings was due to electrical failure (U.S. Fire Administration). About 4,000 injuries a year are caused by electrical outlets. Such simple task as installing a ceiling fan can be dangerous, nearly 20,000 people are injured every year by this so called “simple task”. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision has recorded that each year there are roughly 400 electrocutions (death caused by electricity).

Never attemp a project that is beyond your skill level. Knowing when to call a professional may help prevent injury, electrical fires, and fatalities. No one wants to ever become another statistic so make your first choice Always Best Choice. Click here for our preventative methods page.

”Times are Changing”, yes, Bob Dylan said it best times are changing so lets look at what has. Every day, every month, and every year things are consistently changing nothing is ever the same actually the only thing that remains the same is change. It is one variable in our lives that will never change. So with these waves of change we have seen many wired and innovative inventions, trends, as well ideals. So lets focus on the last decade up until now. Music, life, and the internet have now changed the way we interact with each other. Its now a social highway of online face book accounts with every answer you could want just a click away and 10 M bps will take you there. Are life’s have become virtual, are friends are now digital, if we want to experience something real or authentic, it has to be initiated buy us and for us. With innovative items such as the mp3′s, Ipods, and Ipads. Our phones are now are allies in trying to control the massive data down loads that have become our way of life. If ten years ago you told someone that your phone would be able to surf the web, look at your emails and play music they would think ” is this person for real”. But it happened it changed on us our society can be seen as a living breathing being. With trends that make us look in aw, and ones that parents don’t much care for, IE (gauges, piercings, tattoos). But for them its their authenticity, because in a world like today to make your self different is cool, to understand that not everybody is the same and that we are all different and we bring our own unique set of variables to the table.

Now we told ourselves we wouldn’t watch the Superbowl due to the fact our beloved broncos would not be staring in it, but if you couldn’t resist you probably turned on the T.V. and found that the Big game on Sunday was the last big breath that was our NFL season. Now NFL fans shouldn’t be mad at this because this sudden realization also came with the satisfaction that the ever winning duo that is Belichick and Brady where stopped last night by the New York Giants. The game was actually really good both teams played well and it was nice to see a franchise team get beat by a team that’s record was about 9 to 7. As for Eli Manning he is defiently someone who deserves to win the Superbowl. He no longer follows in his older brothers shadow but cast his own, and leading the Giants to Two Championships that’s going to be a pretty big shadow. Yes, Sunday was a day of excitment, food, and drinks. But the Superbowl is more then that many people around the world watch the Superbowl not only for the game or the halftime show. But also for the commercials it seems that this pastime has made another pastime in its wake. I know a few people who watched this years Superbowl just for the commercials. Its funny how stuff like that works out its become as much about the tailgating parties,as watching marketeirs try there best in about 30 seconds to make an impression on the viewers. Most of the time they do a really good job. Click here to watch top ten Superbowl adds.

With all this crazy Colorado weather, it got me thinking lets make this post about the snow. Winter wonderland if that is what you wanna call it, is soon to be upon us if the weather forcast is correct but in, Colorado it never is lol. As Coloradan’s we see are fair share of very wacky weather. If our weather forecast could be comparable to anything it would be the book ”Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs”. Weather man gets on the T.V. and states that, “we will be seeing partly cloudy skies with skattered icecream flurries in the morning and then near about lunch time, get hungry folks cause lots of wind an followed by burgers. This post is starting to become comical. Now I know that we will probably never ever see food fall from the sky like in our childhood book. But the idea of our irratice weather stays first it rains then it’s windy, now its below zero and we have a blizzard. We just experienced like three different fronts, not many people can say they have done that. Unless they have lived in Colorado. But we all know that this time of year usually brings hugh snowstorms to our foothills. So lets batten down the hatches and keep on truck-in. Or if your like myself look outside if there is more then six inches, work is going to have to wait. But if its less then a foot and a half go snowboarding. This is Colorado and this is why we live hear.

Today in our blog we are going to be discussing how to check your home for possible fire hazards, as well possible ways to fix these hazards. Around this season homeowners will be heating their homes, as well plugging into engine heaters. When doing this many home owners will be using extension cords, splitters and outlets through out their homes. Lets start inside the home, this is where we will find items like space heaters. These items have the potential to become fire hazards. Make sure to always unplug any cords not being used because the more time something is left plugged into the outlet, the more heat that is generated an force it takes to push through the wires on the extension cords and on the outlets. Now to the outside of the home during these cold winter days we see homeowners using engine heaters to keep cars from freezing over in sub zero temps. If you do have extension cords running from inside your garage or home, to and from an outside plug source, make sure to inspect those cords because they are exposed to the elements and the female adapter is not 100% waterproof . As well cords can be damaged by people running them over or a sharp piece of debris can nick the protective line exposing wires. This inspection of your homes electrical components can help keep you in your home, and it doesn’t take much time, so do your self and your home a favor and look for electrical fire hazards. Other fire hazards other then seasonal stuff can be looked at as well. Another serious fire hazard among residential is Federal Pacific Electrical “Stab-Lok” Panels. The problem is that these panels circuit breakers do not trip about 51% of the time. This always almost leads to a fire. We have a hazards page on our website for more info check it out on extension cord usage life, Federal Pacific Electrical Panels.Click here to go to our page
